Opera Prima v2 is the flagship bookshelf model of the Classica line. Designed as a two-way bass-reflex system, it features custom drivers developed in collaboration with Scan-Speak: a 26 mm soft dome tweeter and an 180 mm woofer. Combining engineering, musicality, and artisanal craftsmanship, this speaker delivers a detailed, wide, and natural sound.
Cabinet
The cabinet of Opera Prima was developed with a rigorous approach from the very first design stages. Its proportions were carefully redefined to break up standing waves and minimize localized resonances. A high-density polyurethane material was used as internal damping, reducing residual reflections by more than an order of magnitude.
Measurements confirmed an extremely fast decay of the unavoidable resonances in the lower-midrange area. In listening terms, this translates into a remarkably clean and accurate reproduction, capable of rendering even the most subtle spatial cues and harmonic details with fidelity.
Internal bracing was reduced to the bare minimum to avoid adding unnecessary mass or rigidity that could introduce new colorations. The top and bottom panels are angled with specific inclinations designed to reduce mutual interaction and optimize the distribution of internal waves.
In keeping with Opera’s tradition, the driver recess is internally chamfered to minimize compression effects, particularly in the midrange. The rear-firing reflex port has been carefully tuned to deliver controlled low-end extension without compromising transient speed or harmonic coherence.
Drivers
The collaboration with Scan-Speak played a central role in this project. The drivers were not simply selected “to spec,” but developed through an iterative process focused on real-world listening—only afterward validated through measurement.
The 18 cm woofer, custom-designed for Opera Prima, strikes a fine balance between low moving mass and optimized surface damping. Its aluminum diaphragm ensures a clean response free from prominent breakup modes, while the recalibrated motor assembly—both in force and geometry—delivers excellent acceleration in the lower midrange, with generous, linear excursion.
The tweeter, also from Scan-Speak, has been slightly modified from its original version, particularly in the materials used in the rear chamber. The result is a treble response that is smooth, articulate, and coherent, with thermal management that preserves tonal neutrality even under high dynamic demands.
Crossover
The crossover represents the critical junction between electrical design and real acoustic behavior. Rather than strictly following filter theory, each component was tuned based on in-room listening to optimize phase alignment and tonal coherence between woofer and tweeter.
Despite the aluminum diaphragm, the woofer’s low-pass section requires no notch filtering: control is achieved purely through the ratio of inductance and capacitance, resulting in excellent phase integrity and natural tonal flow. The tweeter’s high-pass section was engineered to maintain tonal balance even at high output levels, with particular attention given to the coil’s thermal stability.
Component selection was guided by extensive listening sessions: Vishay resistors, Mundorf capacitors, and custom inductors made to our specifications. The entire network is mounted on an internally designed PCB with an optimized layout that faithfully preserves the sonic character of the reference prototypes. Internal wiring is made from high-purity copper of generous gauge, ensuring full dynamic expression and clarity.
Design Philosophy
The development of Opera Prima began with a simple yet crucial insight: while room acoustics are studied in great detail, the internal acoustics of a loudspeaker—being an enclosed space—are often overlooked. Like any confined volume, a speaker cabinet can generate unwanted resonances and colorations.
Our focus was therefore on controlling internal behavior, distributing resonances across a wider frequency range to significantly reduce their amplitude. The result is a loudspeaker that delivers wide dynamic range while maintaining detail, articulation, and musicality—even at very low playback levels.
Particular care was devoted to tonal coherence and soundstage reproduction. The entire system was designed to provide natural, even horizontal dispersion and a wide, stable, and believable spatial image. Thanks in large part to our close collaboration with Scan-Speak, Opera Prima offers performance well beyond what is typically expected in its class—an ideal balance of engineering precision, musical sensibility, and handcrafted attention to detail.
