Three-Way Full-Range Planar Design • True Ribbon Tweeter • Quasi-Ribbon Bass & Midrange • Premium X Series Crossover • Dipole Radiation • Handcrafted in Minnesota
The Magnepan 3.7x Floorstanding Speaker (Pair) combines Magnepan's celebrated three-way planar loudspeaker architecture with the premium engineering and hand-matched construction of the X Series. Its large quasi-ribbon bass and midrange sections work with a dedicated true ribbon tweeter to reproduce music with exceptional openness, speed, resolution, and lifelike scale.
Unlike conventional loudspeakers that place dynamic drivers inside a cabinet, the 3.7x uses broad, lightweight diaphragms operating in an open-baffle dipole configuration. Eliminating the traditional enclosure helps reduce box coloration and stored energy, allowing voices and instruments to emerge within an expansive soundstage rather than appearing to originate from the speaker panels.
The premium X Series treatment refines the signal path through Magnepan's three principal areas of improvement: simplification, component betterment, and balancing. Carefully selected crossover components, shortened solid-copper wiring, silver-soldered connections, gilded hardware, and extensive left-to-right matching help the Magnepan 3.7x Floorstanding Speaker (Pair) reveal subtle musical information with greater clarity and precision.
Handcrafted in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, the Magnepan 3.7x Floorstanding Speaker (Pair) is designed for serious two-channel systems with enough space and amplification to take full advantage of its large radiating area. When correctly positioned, the panels create a broad, deeply layered presentation with natural image height, realistic dynamics, and remarkably airy high-frequency detail.
Three-Way Planar Architecture — The 3.7x divides the audible range among quasi-ribbon bass and midrange sections and a dedicated true ribbon tweeter. The large radiating surfaces move very little compared with conventional cones, contributing to rapid transient response and low audible coloration.
True Ribbon High-Frequency Reproduction — The tweeter uses a freely suspended aluminum ribbon rather than a conductor bonded to a supporting film. Its exceptionally low moving mass allows it to respond immediately to subtle musical changes and reproduce high-frequency information with outstanding openness and delicacy.
Quasi-Ribbon Bass and Midrange — Aluminum conductors bonded to lightweight diaphragms distribute the driving force over a large surface. This helps the 3.7x reproduce bass, vocals, and instruments with impressive uniformity and without the cabinet resonances associated with traditional loudspeaker enclosures.
Simplification — Magnepan reduces unnecessary components, excess wiring, mechanical junctions, and overall signal-path mass wherever the design permits. A more direct electrical path helps minimize signal degradation before the music reaches the planar drivers.
Component Betterment — X Series loudspeakers use upgraded copper-rich crossover components and high-quality solid-copper internal wiring. Components are individually evaluated and selected to support lower distortion and greater fidelity.
Precision Balancing — Crossover values and electrical resistance are repeatedly checked throughout assembly. Closely matching the left and right loudspeakers supports stable imaging, tonal consistency, and a more convincing stereo presentation.
Improved Wiring and Connections — The X Series uses 15-gauge or heavier solid high-quality copper wire through most of the internal signal path, with specialized wiring retained for the true ribbon tweeter. Excess wire is removed, layouts are shortened, and internal connections are silver soldered.
Dipole Sound Radiation — Sound radiates from both the front and rear of the panels. With sufficient space behind the speakers, the rear wave interacts with the room to create the dimensionality, image scale, and natural ambience for which Magnepan loudspeakers are known.
The 3.7x retains the same basic three-way driver platform, panel dimensions, frame, fabric, and stiles as the 3.7i. The X Series version adds premium crossover components, reduced wiring and signal-path mass, solid-copper conductors, silver-soldered connections, gilded hardware, and more extensive component testing and left-to-right balancing.
Yes. The 3.7x uses a dedicated true ribbon tweeter together with quasi-ribbon bass and midrange sections. The ribbon's extremely low moving mass contributes to its fast response and extended high-frequency reproduction.
The 3.7x has a nominal 4-ohm impedance and 86dB sensitivity. It should be paired with a high-quality amplifier that remains stable into 4 ohms and can provide ample current. Required output depends on room size, listening distance, preferred volume, and musical material.
The 3.7x should be positioned away from the wall behind it so its dipole radiation pattern can develop properly. Careful adjustment of wall distance, speaker spacing, toe-in, ribbon orientation, and listening position is important for achieving balanced bass and focused imaging.
