Dual 8" low-profile metal-cone woofers • Sealed integrated back box • Fits standard 2x4 wall construction • 36Hz–150Hz frequency response • Zero-bezel magnetic grille
The JBL Synthesis SSW-4 In-wall Passive Subwoofer delivers powerful, accurate low-frequency performance while remaining discreetly concealed within the wall. Designed for high-performance home cinema and architectural music systems, the SSW-4 combines dual 8" low-profile, long-throw metal-cone woofers with a heavily braced molded baffle and integrated sealed MDF enclosure. Its shallow 4" depth is engineered to fit standard 2x4 wood-frame construction, while an isolation mounting system and zero-bezel paintable magnetic grille help create a clean, professionally integrated installation without sacrificing the deep, controlled bass expected from a JBL Synthesis system.
Key Features & Innovations
Dual 8" low-profile long-throw woofers — the JBL Synthesis SSW-4 In-wall Passive Subwoofer uses two Klippel-optimized 8" polymer-coated aluminum-cone woofers with rubber surrounds to deliver powerful, controlled low-frequency output from a compact architectural enclosure.
Integrated sealed back box — front-firing drivers operate within a self-contained MDF enclosure for predictable acoustic performance and consistent bass response without relying on the wall cavity as the speaker enclosure.
Designed for standard 2x4 construction — a shallow 4" overall depth allows the SSW-4 to integrate into standard wood-frame walls, making it suitable for purpose-built theaters as well as many retrofit installations.
Isolation mounting system — the heavily braced molded baffle and integrated enclosure are engineered to provide a rigid mounting structure while helping control unwanted vibration within the surrounding wall.
Zero-bezel architectural grille — a magnetically attached paintable grille provides a clean, low-profile appearance, allowing the JBL Synthesis SSW-4 In-wall Passive Subwoofer to visually disappear into the finished room.
FAQ — SSW-4
Does the JBL SSW-4 require a separate amplifier?
Yes. The SSW-4 is a passive in-wall subwoofer and requires external amplification. JBL Synthesis offers dedicated amplifier solutions designed for the SSW-4, including the SDA-1700 Class D subwoofer amplifier and the multichannel SDA-8300.
Can the SSW-4 fit inside a standard 2x4 wall?
Yes. The JBL Synthesis SSW-4 In-wall Passive Subwoofer is specifically designed for installation in standard 2x4 wood-frame construction. The enclosure measures 4" deep and requires a 23-1/2" x 14-1/2" wall cutout.
Does the SSW-4 have its own back box?
Yes. The SSW-4 is a self-contained in-wall subwoofer module with an integrated sealed MDF back box. This helps provide predictable acoustic performance without depending on the volume or construction of the wall cavity.
Can multiple SSW-4 subwoofers be used in one home theater?
Yes. Multiple SSW-4 modules can be incorporated into a JBL Synthesis theater to improve bass output and achieve more even low-frequency coverage throughout the listening area. A single SDA-8300 amplifier can support up to eight SSW-4 subwoofer modules.
