A Floating Analog Experience Where Music, Light and Design Become One

The Audio-Technica Hotaru Limited-Edition Floating Turntable with Light & Sound is a radically different interpretation of the record player, combining premium analog playback with integrated amplification, speakers and a responsive lighting system. Using magnetic repulsion between the upper turntable structure and lower speaker section, Hotaru appears to float in midair while simultaneously isolating the cartridge and platter from vibration that could interfere with playback accuracy.

Sound and light are intentionally integrated into the experience. Twenty available colors and three lighting modes can create a constant glow, smoothly transition through different shades, or dynamically respond to the character of the music. A carbon-fiber tonearm, concealed belt-driven sub-platter and specially finished black AT-VM740xML cartridge with nude Microlinear stylus provide the analog foundation, while the aluminum speaker enclosure, acrylic structure and solid brass feet make Hotaru as much an interior-design statement as a high-end audio component.

Highlights & Benefits

  • Magnetically Levitated Floating Structure — Magnetic repulsion suspends the upper turntable assembly above the speaker base, creating a dramatic visual effect while isolating the cartridge from internal and external vibration.
  • Integrated Amplifier & Speaker System — Hotaru is a complete all-in-one analog system with amplification, dual 2.5-inch speaker units and dual 1.2-inch tweeters built into the aluminum base.
  • 20-Color Reactive Lighting — Three lighting modes provide static illumination, flowing color transitions or music-responsive visual effects synchronized with record playback.
  • Special AT-VM740xML Cartridge — A limited-edition black version of Audio-Technica’s premium VM cartridge uses a 2.2 × 0.12 mil nude Microlinear stylus for highly detailed groove tracking.
  • Limited to 1,000 Units Worldwide — Hotaru is an exceptionally limited global release designed as the second installment in Audio-Technica’s analog ~ naturally program.

Technology & Design

Magnetic Repulsion Isolation — Magnets positioned in the upper turntable and lower speaker sections repel one another, allowing the record-playing assembly to float. Beyond aesthetics, this helps suppress vibration before it reaches the stylus and cartridge.

Concealed Belt-Driven Sub-Platter — A belt-driven sub-platter hides the drive mechanism from view while reducing direct transmission of motor vibration to the main platter. A DC servo motor provides selectable 33-1/3 and 45 RPM operation.

Carbon-Fiber Tonearm — Hotaru uses a lightweight, high-rigidity static-balanced straight carbon tonearm with a 227.7mm effective length and adjustable tracking force from 0 to 4 grams.

Integrated Sound-Reactive Lighting — Basic Mode maintains a single selected color, Gradation Mode transitions through colors smoothly, and Link Mode interprets the music and changes the illumination dynamically in response to the sound.

FAQ — Audio-Technica Hotaru

Does Hotaru really float?

Yes. The upper turntable assembly is suspended using magnetic repulsion between magnets in the turntable and speaker sections. Audio-Technica designed this floating structure both for visual effect and to help isolate the cartridge from vibration.

Does Hotaru require a separate amplifier and speakers?

No. Hotaru is an all-in-one system with an integrated amplifier and built-in speaker system. It can therefore reproduce records without requiring a separate amplifier or loudspeakers.

What cartridge comes with Hotaru?

Hotaru includes a special limited-edition black version of the Audio-Technica AT-VM740xML VM stereo cartridge. It uses a nude Microlinear stylus and has a specified output of 3.2mV.

How limited is Audio-Technica Hotaru?

Audio-Technica states that Hotaru is limited to just 1,000 units worldwide. Its official model designation is AT-FTT.
