The Audio-Technica AT-VM760xSL VMx Special Line Contact MM Phono Cartridge is the flagship model in Audio-Technica’s VMx 700 Series, combining its Dual Moving Magnet generator architecture with an advanced Special Line Contact stylus and solid boron cantilever. Designed for high-resolution vinyl playback, the cartridge provides extended frequency response to 30kHz and precise groove tracing intended to reveal fine musical detail, subtle spatial information, and complex high-frequency modulation.
The redesigned VMx platform adds PCUHD internal coil wiring, paratoroidal coil construction, a center shielding plate, threaded mounting holes, and a rigid die-cast aluminum body. Together, these refinements improve electrical efficiency, reduce unwanted resonance and crosstalk, and simplify installation. With a 3.7mV output and standard 47kΩ loading, the AT-VM760xSL works with high-quality moving-magnet phono stages while offering performance aimed at demanding analog systems.
VMx Dual Moving Magnet Generator — Two magnets are positioned to correspond with the left and right groove walls, closely mirroring the geometry of a stereo record cutter head for accurate channel reproduction.
Paratoroidal Coil Construction — Two coils per channel are stacked in a paratoroidal arrangement to improve generator efficiency and channel separation. A center shielding plate further reduces electrical crosstalk between channels.
Special Line Contact Geometry — The advanced stylus profile maintains a narrow contact radius along the groove modulation while extending vertically along the groove wall, supporting precise tracking and detailed reproduction.
Interchangeable VMx Stylus Platform — The AT-VM760xSL uses the AT-VMN60xSL replacement stylus and shares the broader VMx body architecture, allowing compatible stylus substitutions within the stereo VMx family.
The AT-VM760xSL is a moving-magnet cartridge. Audio-Technica recommends a 47kΩ load impedance and 150–250pF load capacitance, making it suitable for compatible MM phono inputs and MM phono preamplifiers.
Audio-Technica specifies a tracking-force range of 1.8 to 2.2 grams, with 2.0 grams as the standard setting.
The correct direct replacement is the Audio-Technica AT-VMN60xSL Special Line Contact stylus. Audio-Technica rates this stylus type for approximately 800 hours of use under appropriate operating conditions.
The AT-VM760xSL uses Audio-Technica’s Special Line Contact stylus and extends frequency response to 30kHz, while the AT-VM750xSH uses a nude Shibata stylus and is specified to 27kHz. Both use solid boron cantilevers and the premium aluminum-bodied VMx 700 Series architecture.
