The Audio-Technica AT-VM520xEB VMx Dual MM Elliptical Bonded Cartridge combines Audio-Technica’s updated VMx Dual Moving Magnet generator with a 0.3 × 0.7 mil bonded elliptical stylus for accurate, engaging record playback. Compared with a conventional conical stylus, the elliptical profile provides more precise contact with the groove walls, helping retrieve additional detail while maintaining dependable tracking across a wide variety of records.
The redesigned VMx platform incorporates paratoroidal coils, PCUHD copper conductors, fewer coil turns for improved transient response, a center shielding plate, and convenient threaded mounting inserts. Its 5.0 mV output and conventional moving-magnet loading requirements make the AT-VM520xEB easy to integrate with a broad range of turntables and MM phono stages, while the removable stylus design provides a straightforward path for future replacement or compatible VMx stylus upgrades.
VMx Dual Moving Magnet Architecture — Separate magnets correspond to the left and right channels of the stereo groove, closely mirroring the geometry of the cutter head used to create the record master.
Paratoroidal Coil Construction — Two coils per channel are arranged one behind the other to improve generator efficiency, channel separation and transient response.
Elliptical Groove Contact — The bonded elliptical stylus follows the groove more accurately than a conventional spherical tip, providing a strong balance of detail, tracking ability and affordability.
Interchangeable VMx Stylus Platform — The direct replacement is the AT-VMN20xEB, while most stereo AT-VMx and earlier VM-series styli can be fitted to the same cartridge-body architecture for future experimentation or upgrades.
The AT-VM520xEB is a moving-magnet cartridge designed for a compatible MM phono input or MM phono preamplifier. Audio-Technica recommends a 47 kΩ load impedance and 150–250 pF load capacitance.
Audio-Technica specifies a tracking-force range of 1.8 to 2.2 grams, with 2.0 grams as the standard recommended setting.
The direct replacement is the Audio-Technica AT-VMN20xEB bonded elliptical stylus. Most stereo AT-VMx and previous-generation VM-series replacement styli are also compatible with the cartridge body.
The AT-VM520xEB uses a bonded elliptical stylus, while the AT-VM530xEN uses a nude elliptical diamond with lower moving mass. The 520xEB is rated at 20–20,000 Hz, 5.0 mV output and 24 dB channel separation, while the 530xEN extends to 25,000 Hz and uses a different generator/output specification.
Headshell, turntable, phono preamplifier, cartridge alignment tools, tracking-force gauge and other accessories are sold separately unless otherwise specified.
