Audio-Technica AT-OC9XSL Dual Moving Coil Cartridge

Dual Moving Coil Stereo Cartridge • Nude Special Line Contact Stylus • Solid Boron Cantilever • PCOCC Coils • Aluminum Body • 20–50,000 Hz Frequency Response

Reference-Grade Moving Coil Performance with Special Line Contact Precision

The Audio-Technica AT-OC9XSL Dual Moving Coil Cartridge is engineered for highly resolving vinyl systems where detail retrieval, channel separation and precise tracking are priorities. Its nude Special Line Contact stylus traces a broad area of the groove wall, helping retrieve subtle musical information while reducing tracing distortion. A 0.28 mm solid boron cantilever adds exceptional rigidity and low moving mass, contributing to fast transient response and finely resolved high-frequency detail.

The AT-OC9XSL uses independent moving coils for the left and right channels, with PCOCC copper wire and a reverse V-shaped coil configuration designed to minimize stylus pressure and distortion. Its rigid aluminum body helps control unwanted resonance, while threaded mounting holes simplify installation on compatible headshells and tonearms. With a 20 Hz to 50 kHz frequency response and 0.4 mV output, it is designed for high-performance analog systems equipped with a compatible moving-coil phono stage, head amplifier or step-up transformer.

Highlights & Benefits

  • Nude Special Line Contact Stylus — The 1.5 × 0.28 mil profile provides an extended contact area with the groove walls for precise tracking, fine detail retrieval and reduced tracing distortion.
  • Solid Boron Cantilever — A 0.28 mm-diameter nude boron cantilever combines exceptional stiffness with low moving mass for fast, accurate response to groove modulation.
  • Independent Dual Moving Coils — Separate coils for the left and right channels support excellent stereo separation and accurate imaging.
  • PCOCC Coil Wire — Pure Copper by Ohno Continuous Casting is used for the coils to provide highly conductive signal transmission from the cartridge generator.
  • Rigid Aluminum Body — The machined aluminum housing helps suppress unwanted vibration and resonance while providing a stable platform for the generator assembly.

Technology & Design

Special Line Contact Diamond — Audio-Technica's nude Special Line Contact stylus uses a sophisticated 1.5 × 0.28 mil contact geometry designed to trace fine groove modulation with exceptional accuracy across a large contact area.

Reverse V-Shaped Coil Alignment — The moving coils are arranged in a reverse V configuration, reducing pressure on the stylus assembly and helping minimize distortion as the cartridge tracks complex groove information.

0.28 mm Solid Boron Cantilever — Boron's high stiffness-to-mass ratio allows the cantilever to respond rapidly to groove movement while resisting flex, contributing to precise transients and extended high-frequency reproduction.

Threaded Aluminum Cartridge Body — Integrated M2.6 threaded mounting holes allow installation using two screws without separate nuts, while the rigid aluminum body helps reduce resonance and mechanical coloration.

FAQ — Audio-Technica AT-OC9XSL

What type of stylus does the AT-OC9XSL use?

The AT-OC9XSL uses a nude Special Line Contact stylus with a 1.5 × 0.28 mil curvature radius. This advanced line-contact profile is designed for precise tracing and high levels of detail retrieval.

What tracking force should I use with the AT-OC9XSL?

Audio-Technica specifies a tracking-force range of 1.8 to 2.2 grams, with 2.0 grams as the standard recommended setting.

Does the AT-OC9XSL require a moving-coil phono stage?

Yes. With an output of 0.4 mV, the AT-OC9XSL should be connected to a compatible MC phono input, head amplifier, phono equalizer or suitable step-up transformer. Audio-Technica specifies a recommended load impedance of at least 100 ohms when connected to a head amplifier.

Can the stylus on the AT-OC9XSL be replaced by the user?

No. Unlike a moving-magnet cartridge with a removable stylus assembly, the stylus and moving-coil generator are integrated into the cartridge. Moving-coil stylus service or replacement typically requires professional cartridge service rather than a user-replaceable stylus.
