Audio-Technica AT-LP5x Direct-Drive Turntable

Fully Manual Direct-Drive Turntable • 33-1/3, 45 & 78 RPM • AT-VM95E Cartridge • J-Shaped Tonearm • Built-In MM/MC Phono Preamp • USB Output

High-Performance Direct-Drive Vinyl Playback with Flexible Analog and USB Connectivity

The Audio-Technica AT-LP5x Direct-Drive Turntable combines precision direct-drive engineering with a fully manual layout designed for serious vinyl listening. Its low-noise DC servo motor rotates the die-cast aluminum platter at 33-1/3, 45 or 78 RPM, while a heavy 5 mm rubber mat and damped chassis construction help reduce low-frequency vibration and acoustic feedback. The turntable comes equipped with Audio-Technica's AT-VM95E dual moving magnet cartridge mounted to a lightweight AT-HS6 headshell.

A J-shaped tonearm inspired by classic Audio-Technica designs uses metallic gimbal suspension and precision bearings to help minimize tracking error, with adjustable tracking force and anti-skate for proper cartridge setup. The built-in switchable MM/MC phono preamplifier allows connection to systems with or without a dedicated phono input, while USB output provides a convenient way to digitize records using a compatible computer.

Highlights & Benefits

  • Low-Noise Direct-Drive Motor — Provides stable platter rotation with strong starting torque and eliminates the belt used by conventional belt-drive turntables.
  • Three-Speed Playback — Selectable 33-1/3, 45 and 78 RPM operation supports LPs, singles and compatible 78 RPM records.
  • AT-VM95E Cartridge Included — The supplied dual moving magnet cartridge uses a 0.3 × 0.7 mil bonded elliptical stylus and provides access to Audio-Technica's interchangeable VM95 stylus platform.
  • Built-In MM/MC Phono Preamp — Switchable phono and line-level output allows the AT-LP5x to integrate with a wide range of amplifiers, receivers, powered speakers and external phono stages.
  • USB Record Digitization — A built-in USB interface supports 16-bit digital conversion at 44.1 or 48 kHz for transferring vinyl recordings to a compatible computer.

Technology & Design

J-Shaped Static-Balance Tonearm — Inspired by Audio-Technica tonearms from the 1960s and 1970s, the 247 mm J-shaped arm uses a metallic gimbal suspension and precision bearings to support accurate groove tracking. Adjustable counterweight and anti-skate controls provide flexibility for cartridge setup.

Damped Chassis and Aluminum Platter — Anti-vibration materials, heavy-mass metal chassis inserts and a die-cast aluminum platter help reduce unwanted resonance and low-frequency acoustic feedback.

5 mm Rubber Platter Mat — The substantial rubber damping mat provides a stable record surface while helping isolate the platter from low-frequency vibration.

External Power Conversion — The supplied AC adapter performs AC-to-DC conversion outside the turntable chassis, helping keep power-supply noise away from the sensitive analog signal path.

FAQ — Audio-Technica AT-LP5x

Does the Audio-Technica AT-LP5x have a built-in phono preamp?

Yes. The AT-LP5x includes a switchable phono preamplifier that supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges. It can output either phono-level or line-level audio depending on the connected system.

What cartridge comes with the AT-LP5x?

The turntable includes an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E dual moving magnet cartridge with a 0.3 × 0.7 mil bonded elliptical stylus, mounted to an AT-HS6 removable headshell.

Can the AT-LP5x play 78 RPM records?

Yes. The motor supports 78 RPM in addition to 33-1/3 and 45 RPM. For proper playback of many traditional 78 RPM records, a stylus designed for wider 78 RPM grooves should be used rather than the included AT-VM95E microgroove stylus.

Can I upgrade the cartridge on the AT-LP5x?

Yes. The removable headshell and adjustable tonearm allow compatible cartridges to be installed. Audio-Technica specifies an applicable cartridge-and-headshell weight range of 15 to 20 grams, and the built-in preamp supports both MM and MC cartridge types.
