Keith –
You have to ask yourself why the Marantz TT-15s1 has been selling so well and getting such high marks even after 10+ years of being in the market (with no changes to the original specs). It is because this is both an outstanding turntable and a tremendous value.
Designed and built-to spec by Clearaudio in Germany (one of the top producers of fine HiFi equipment) for Marantz’s Reference Series product line, this turntable has stood the test of time.
Pros:
Build – Top end tone arm & cartridge (Virtuoso Wood v1), adjustable legs, beautiful and dense solid acrylic plinth and platter, and a solid as a rock – built like a tank AC motor that is so silent and separate from the rest of the turntable you have to look for movement to tell it’s running.
Beauty – It’s also timeless in its clean, modern design. Many have lit the back or underside with remote controlled LED lights to really highlight the mysterious beauty of this unique and high quality instrument.
Sound – I traded up from a premium turntable because the price was nice but the sound wasn’t (even from brand-new clean LPs) – Now with the Marantz TT, I’m hearing detail never reveled by comparable and even higher-end turntables. The Virtuoso Wood cartridge produces crisp, clean, yet warm sound and accurate (not over-boosted as sometimes popular) bass response. No listening fatigue with this turntable combination.
Value – Add all the above with the price point and great support/delivery from Audiolab and you get high value. Audiolab even double-boxed my purchase to ensure it arrived in factory perfect condition.
Cons: The hole in the plinth the AC motor fits in could be a few millimeters larger so that there’s less chance it could be bumped closer to the plinth.
