The Black Disk seems to catch the attention of a wider audience that the consolidated lovers it always could rely on. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAware of this trend Unison Research decided to enhance its catalogue adding a new turntable+arm+cartridge system named Giro and to work on a new release of two of its standalone phono stages: SimplyPhono and PhonoOne. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe new SimplyPhono bears the same name and indeed shares the same appearance as its predecessors but thanks to a revisited circuitry and improved layout it exhibits noticeably better audio performances. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs its predecessor the new SimplyPhono is an all-tube phono preamplifier. All the stages work in pure class A and no global negative feedback neither local feedback is applied. It employs 4 ECC83\/12AX7 double triode (versus the 3 ones used in the previous release of the unit). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe tubes are arranged so that the first couple of triodes acts in parallel as a maximum gain stage implementing a particular configuration named “ionic bias” in order to prevent the cathode self-polarizing circuit from introducing unwanted local reverse-effects and with improved performances as regards noise and distortion. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor the RIAA equalization network a completely passive solution has been chosen after some listening test. The use of strict tolerance resistors and hand picked, measured and selected capacitors ensures a precision of 0.1dB of the frequency response. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe equalization network is followed by a second gain stage direct coupled with a cathode follower output stage as an optimal solution in order to achieve the needed overall gain and a low output impedance. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eParticular care has been put in the power supply stages. In order to maximize the dynamic response of the unit a high value for the anodic supply has been chosen. A particular circuit using a series power MOSFET and a precise voltage regulator ensures a stable low ripple supply voltage of more than 300V. A further filter feeds the second and output stages of both channel with a very stable voltage. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn order to minimize cross-talk and PSRR (power supply rejection ratio) in the first (and more tricky) gain stage a last couple of RC filters and a zener regulations has been implemented, one for each channel. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs usual for Unison Research technical staff, a great care has been dedicated to the design of the layout of the board. This is a key feature that is often undervalued but that can heavily affect the final result. Even if the production of this item had been discontinued some years ago the request never stopped so Unison Research decided to renew and improve this design. Nothing has changed; since the original design was so nice and timeless that even after many years it has its untouched aesthetic appeal. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe circuit implemented has lots of features in common with the SimplyPhono, here one more tube has been used, bringing up to 10 the number of triode (i.e. 5 ECC83\/12AX7 double triodes). All of the gain stages are now implementing parallel configuration for the best noise and distortion performances. This solution also increases the overall gain to approximately 54dB, enough for all the MM and most of the MC cartridges. The same passive RIAA network has been adopted but with specially selected components in order to ensure strict tolerance to the equalization curve. Increased value for the output capacitors improves bandwidth and phase rotation at low frequencies. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn order to avoid the problem of dc voltage and bump during the warm up and switch off time of the unit a delayed muting function has been implemented, this way the output is disabled till the tubes reaches their optimal temperature and working point at the switch on and prevent the loud bump at the switch off. While in SimplyPhono only the resistive component of input impedance is selectable here both resistance and capacitance can be matched to the requirement of any cartridge for best performances. A dedicated free location on the PCB allows the installation of custom value resistors in order to set the interface parameters even at any non common value. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eParticular care has also been dedicated to power supply design. In order to minimize cross-talk and inter-stage interference an independent RC filter cell has been placed near every gain stage, thus reducing the cross-talk (especially at low frequency) of more than 20dB in comparison with the extraordinary performances of SimplyPhono. In the new PhonoOne low frequency cross-talk is practically immeasurable, less than -90dB. Also a careful layout design improving channel separation and interference rejection, together with an elastic suspension of the amplifier board helped bringing the sonic performances of the new PhonoOne to a supreme level of natural detail and musical clarity. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs imposed for a no-compromise design, all the supply voltages are regulated and heavily filtered.
